I decided to compose this manual after many requests for assistance and help with the various challenges of removal, inspection, repair, adjustment, and assembly of the components of the Maytag single cylinder engine we commonly refer to as the Model 92. Most avid Maytag collectors have a copy of the service manual for these engines, but it does not contain a great deal of detail for the person that is about to endeavor on his first project with the famed Maytag Multi-Motor, 3/4 hp version.

I don’t pretend to believe that I am an expert on these engines or have the magic solution to the problems we encounter with these 2-cycle "hit & miss" creations. I just desire to share some of my observations and suggestions with fellow collectors and restorers. Most of the steps, instructions, and guidelines are based on my working knowledge and experience with the engine as well as suggestions that were shared with me when I began restoring the Maytag Multi-Motor. I hope this manual serves as a helpful guide while you are reworking your engine.

The heyday of these old engines has long ago passed, and as Will Rodgers has said, "they aren’t making any more of them". The preservation of the remaining engines is necessary to insure that future generations will understand the impact these machines made in our lives. I believe that these working examples of early gas power should be passed on to future generations. I therefore dedicate this manual to my family, friends, and every antique gas engine enthusiast.
