Inspect the points closely. Make sure the top arm moves freely and the spring is intact to assure a good snap action to the opening and closing of the points. The adjustable lower point surface on this one needs to be raised to give a better flat alignment of the contacts.

The coil can be removed to better clean the rust and corrosion from the metal coil laminations. Clean the inside of the coil tower. Moisture and foreign matter can accumulate in this area and result in poor contact with the spark plug wire terminal. Inspect the primary coil wire that was attached to the points. If the insulation is cracked or frayed, remove the old insulation and replace it with a section of shrinkable wire insulation tubing.

The coil backing plate has now been cleaned. Mineral spirits was used to remove oil and grease deposits and lacquer thinner removed any paint residue. Glass bead blasting finished the job by cleaning the small corners, edges, and all surfaces on the points. The coil mounting screws are installed but not tightened because the coil will have to be shifted for proper alignment when the flywheel is mounted.
