Preface
The decision to compose this manual came as a result of the favorable
comments received after the printing of the single cylinder Model 92 manual in
2004. I receive many calls, e-mails, and letters asking for information and
assistance with the challenge of removal, inspection, repair, adjustment,
testing, or assembly of the components on the Maytag Multi-Motor twin cylinder
engine. I wanted to document these steps in a manner that would be easily used
by any person that is about to attempt a repair project with the famed Maytag
Multi-Motor twin cylinder model 72 version.
I don’t pretend that I am an expert on these engines or have all the solutions
to the challenges encountered with these 2-cycle creations. I just desire to
share some of my observations and suggestions with fellow collectors and
restorers. Most of the steps, instructions, and guidelines are based on my
working knowledge and experience with the engine as well as suggestions that
were shared with me when I began restoring the Maytag Multi-Motor. I hope this
manual serves as a helpful guide to anyone who is reworking a twin cylinder
Maytag engine.
The preservation and display of these engines is necessary to insure that future generations can experience and understand the role of these machines in our history. I believe that these working examples of early gas power should be passed on to prosperity. I therefore dedicate this manual to my family, friends, and every antique gas engine enthusiast.
Workshops contain a variety of tools and materials that can cause serious injury. Always make sure you have the skills, knowledge, tools, and experience to do the work safely. Be sure to read, understand, and obey the safety instructions that are provided by the product manufacturers. I want you to be healthy enough to enjoy that next project.
